When counseling my clients, I have often quoted Maitreya’s assertion (channeled by Margaret McElroy) that “There are no accidents,” a phrase he has used many times in his newsletters and channelings.

•   “There are no accidents in the human world. Everything is as it should be for each individual soul to learn their lessons. Many souls make it; many souls have to return to another incarnation to do so. It is choice, nothing more. It is the Self that creates the need by constantly berating and enforcing negative programming. When one can move to the Higher Self, one no longer has the problem.” ~ Maitreya (Newsletter #83, September 1, 2003)

Not that everyone is receptive to that notion; to the contrary. Almost every client in one way or another sees herself or himself as a “victim,” sometimes due to unforeseen or uncontrollable circumstances, sometimes due to “fate,” or sometimes as the result of intentional (often very horrific) acts of other people. Psychologists refer to this general tendency as the “fundamental attribution error.” In short, people tend to attribute their negative outcomes to external factors (for example, bad luck, other people’s intentions, etc.) while attributing their positive outcomes to internal factors (for example, skill, hard work, etc.) In other words, it is just “human nature” for people not to take responsibility for the negative things in their lives but to “soak up” all the glory for everything positive that “happens” to them. And since each of us is a natural-born human being, “The enemy is us!” as the long-running (1948–1975) daily newspaper cartoon character, Pogo, said so aptly.

While the fundamental attribution error may be a natural human tendency, it really doesn’t serve us very well. The fact is that it is a systematic bias in human perception and information processing that only leads to distorted perceptions and errors in decision making. It may help us to feel better about ourselves, but it doesn’t at all help us to do the one thing we came to the earth plane to accomplish. We are here to experience life in all its manifestations and to learn to balance the energies of life to raise our level of consciousness and become master of our own life. That means taking responsibility for everything in your life, positive and negative. In short, when it comes to living on the earth plane, there are no accidents. Everything has a purpose, and that purpose is soul evolution.

•   “In this universe, which was created by a divine, organizing intelligence, there are simply no accidents. With everything that has happened to you, you can either feel sorry for yourself, or treat what has happened as a gift. Everything is either an opportunity to grow or an obstacle to keep you from growing. You get to choose.” ~ Dr. Wayne W. Dyer (1940–2015; American psychotherapist, self-help advocate, spiritual teacher & author)

The fact is that we choose to experience everything that happens to us before we incarnate. Maitreya is very clear on this point. For example:

•   “Before you are born you choose many opportunities to learn in many different ways.” ~ Maitreya (Newsletter #224, March 5, 2009)

and

•   “Each soul has their own plan, each soul chooses their own way of learning their lessons and moving forward on their spiritual path.” ~ Maitreya (Maitreya Facebook Fan Page, December 12, 2012)

If you are to truly understand and accept what happens to you in your life, the answer always lies within. There are always lessons yet to be learned, there may be karma to balance as well, and more likely than not these will manifest in your current life as past-life energy to be released. The general (and sometimes specific) outlines of these three factors can be found in your natal astrological chart, and their purpose is to help you to grow through allowing, balancing, and aligning your life energies with your Higher Self.

As a spiritual counselor and healing practitioner, I am often faced with the problem of speaking my truth (absolutely essential according to Maitreya) while always trying to uplift my clients at the same time. But a “victim” of a violent attack, for example, is rarely ready to entertain the idea that they are ultimately responsible for choosing their role in such an event. They just don’t see such a suggestion as at all uplifting or even helpful. Let’s face it, “Truth” is often not popular even though it is essential for healing as well as for spiritual growth. As a counselor, reader, or healer, how can one deal with such a situation?

My only answer to this question (so far) is “very carefully.” I believe that you have to meet people “where they are” in their thinking and beliefs in order to begin to help them. They chose their situation in order to learn and grow on their spiritual path. But for most people, it is just too big a jump from “victim” to “I chose this situation;” it is just too big a pill to swallow. Each of us has to learn to crawl before we can walk, let alone run. As the saying goes, “little steps for little feet.” But isn’t that compromising the principle of “speaking my truth?” in this case, I don’t believe so.

I believe that Maitreya’s admonition regarding speaking one’s truth (quietly and clearly, with love) really deals with facing one’s fear to speak the truth. In other words, it is about motive and intent. If the motive to not speak my truth is based on fear of the consequences for me (for example, fear of social rejection or fear of hurting someone’s feelings), then I have a problem. I need to learn to face my fear and speak my truth (quietly and clearly, with love).

But if my motive and intent is to help someone to cope with what IS in their life, to support and assist them in their healing process, and ultimately to help them to be able to accept their role as creator of their own reality, then I may have to gradually introduce “my truth” as a possibility for their consideration at a future time when they are more “ready” to at least hear (if not accept) it. I am not here to “fix” them because they are not “broken, ” and they are entitled to their truth until such time as they are ready to change their truth. Change on the earth plane takes time, especially fundamental change in one’s life. In other words, I have no need to feel guilty or negligent in waiting to speak my truth regarding “there are no accidents.” I just need to listen to Spirit for guidance about where and when to do so.

•   “There are no accidents in life. What is happening is that change is being brought to the world slowly and surely.” ~ Maitreya (Newsletter #134, November 26, 2004)

Ultimately, we need to develop an appreciation for everything that happens in our lives, “good” or “bad.” Life on the earth plane is a school of experience where we have chosen every person and every situation in life for the purpose of our own soul evolution.

•   “Each place along the way is somewhere you had to be to be here.” ~ Dr. Wayne W. Dyer (1940–2015; American psychotherapist, self-help advocate, spiritual teacher & author)

•   “Suffering is but another name for the teaching of experience, which is the parent of instruction and the schoolmaster of life.” ~ Horace (65–8 BCE; Roman lyric poet and satirist)

But if you are “ready” to understand and accept that there are no accidents, it is also important to actually implement this concept in your daily life. Don’t blame anyone, including yourself. Learn to accept your current situation as it IS (without judgment) and acknowledge that it is ultimately an experience you chose as yet another opportunity to raise your vibrational frequency and learn to become master of your own life.

•   “Let go of the emotions and the emotional body and you can fly! That is how you can raise your vibration.” ~ Maitreya (Newsletter #277, January 6, 2010)

Have a great month!

Dennis
