We live in an “interesting” world these days, but when was that ever not the case? My parents and grandparents certainly lived in “interesting times.” My grandparents witnessed the first flying machines, lived through a global pandemic and two world wars, the social conflicts around giving women the vote as well as events connected with the Jim Crow Era and the Civil Rights Movement. Oh, and they also watched the first human beings walk on the surface of the moon—in real time! In many respects, my parents lived in “simpler times” with only one major global conflict, a handful of international conflicts on a regional basis, and no pandemic. But they certainly had to learn to cope with a rapidly changing world. I remember them also reminiscing about “the good old days” just as my grandparents did.
I also hear my contemporaries (who missed World War II and were likely too young to understand the Korean War) extolling “the good old days” when life was much simpler, safer, and less complicated than it seems today. This, as I read their posts on Facebook or chat with them via Zoom, many of them using the latest-model cell phone! Yes, technology has radically changed our lives and culture, but the problems we face as individuals and societies are basically the same as they were in the past ... how many generations now?
A very salient feature of my (and my children’s) generation is the degree of divisiveness, of “us” versus “them,” in contemporary culture around the world. A big part of all these problems seems to be the inherent and incessant need to “take sides” in any and every disagreement. There has always been disagreement and conflict, but the degree of that conflict in civil life certainly seems to have reached a new high (or arguably low) point. In this regard, it is painful to see the United States of America as a world leader of the internal strife and division we see around the globe. But why?
There is an old song from 1939 (before my time, believe it or not!) by Sy Oliver & James “Trummy” Young that says, “It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it“ ... “It ain’t what you say, it’s the way that you say it” ... “That’s what gets results!” I used to teach those principles to my business and non-profit management students years ago, with the addendum that they apply to all relationships, not just managing people in organizations. All these years later, I still believe it to be true, but I now also understand its importance for individual souls. I say “souls” rather than just “individuals” to emphasize the point that is true not only about material life, but our spiritual life as well. So, what do these lyrics have to do with “Taking Sides?”
Maitreya (channeled by Margaret McElroy) is very clear when he says,
• “There are no rights; there are no wrongs—only what resonates with you. It is your choice.” ~ (The Essence of Maitreya’s Teachings)
• “Do not blame anyone else for your life circumstances, because you created your life. Do not be upset with yourself, you are simply learning from each experience. There is no wrong or right, only learning.” ~ Maitreya (Wisdom Cards, #79)
So, Taking Sides (making a choice) is OK regardless of the outcome. You either get what you want or you have an opportunity to learn a lesson (the purpose of life on the earth plane). Like it or not, either way, it’s a “Win-Win.”
Taking Sides (making a choice) is about what you say or do, and the song lyrics tell us that isn’t what gets results. How you say it or do it is what gets results. In other words, make a choice that resonates with you (referring to the real YOU, your Higher Self). But if you don’t choose what resonates with your Higher Self, that choice isn’t wrong,
• “There are no mistakes, only choices.” (Maitreya Newsletter #309)
Every choice in life is an opportunity to learn life lessons, perhaps balance some karma, and/or detach from trapped energy (most of which originated in past lives).
Taking Sides (making a choice) is very natural and necessary. Abraham [collective consciousness of Spirit as channeled by Esther Hicks] calls making a choice “Contrast.” You acknowledge what you don’t want which prompts you to focus on (choose) what you do want. I discuss this more thoroughly in my blogs, Why Do We Make “Mistakes?” and How Do We Stop Making “Mistakes?”).
“Now, wait a minute!” I can hear some readers say. “I know what results are right and what results are wrong! You’re crazy!” Well, I may, indeed, be a little crazy, but the fact is that how you say or do whatever you have chosen really is far more important than what you have chosen to say or do. How makes all the difference in getting results or not, even if your choice resonates with your Higher Self (or aligns with Higher Self as Abraham phrases it). The reason is that how you say or do it determines whether you are allowing your life energies to flow naturally, unhindered by resistance. Allowing is a necessary condition for Balancing your life energies which, in turn, is a necessary condition for Aligning them with your Higher Self (see my three Dancing with the Energy books).
Still think I am crazy? Well, let’s see what Abraham and Maitreya have to say:
• “We want to make three powerful statements to you, and if these are the only three things you ever hear, they will be enough:
#1: The only problem, the only thing that causes you any trouble, the only thing that slows you down, the only thing that keeps you from what you want ... is resistance!
#2: Resistance is always accompanied by negative emotion and/or pain. ...
#3: Resistance is always ... pushing against something.” ~ Abraham (December 6, 1995)
• “Physical man gets into an uncomfortable place when he concludes, ‘I and those like me have come to the right decisions, and everybody that’s living outside of these right decisions is wrong.’ And then he spends his life pushing against all those ‘wrong’ decisions and cutting himself off from the Life Force that would help him have joy in his, what he concludes to be, ‘right decisions.’ There is no one right path. There are endless paths, and the differences in the paths are what make them more and more, and more, perfect. The same old path no longer serves.” ~ Abraham (Orlando, FL, February 3, 2001)
• “It is pushing against unwanted ... that disconnects you from Source. There is nothing more Spiritual than to allow the true spirit that is you to flow through you into your physical life. The absence of Spirituality is not about the subject or the activity. It is about the vibrational choices that you are making.” ~ Abraham (The Vortex, Where the Law of Attraction Assembles All Cooperative Relationships, 2009)
• “Even in your rightness about a subject, when you try to push your rightness toward another who disagrees, no matter how right you are, it causes more pushing against. In other words, it isn’t until you stop pushing that any real allowing of what you want can take place.” ~ Abraham (Boston, MA, May 17, 2003)
• “If you could get to the place where you no longer feel a need to push against anything that you disagree with—you would become in alignment with what you do agree with. Even within your own body, it is your pushing against those things you don’t agree with that causes you to be out of alignment with what you do agree.” ~ Abraham (Philadelphia, PA, May 13, 2002)
• “You can’t take sides against anything. If you would just leave the ‘against’ part out; if you would just be one who is for things—you would live happily ever after.” ~ Abraham (North Los Angeles, CA, March 7, 2000)
• “A withdrawal of attention from the unwanted condition is necessary in order to release it from your experience, but it is also necessary to cease the resistant thought that pinched off the Well-Being to begin with.” ~ Abraham (Getting into the Vortex Guided Meditations CD and User Guide, 2010)
• “If you did not have these times where things did not go the way you envisioned, then you would not have been able to learn how to do it better, faster, more precise, etc. Nobody can be perfect on the Earth plane, because everyone has a [Lower] Self, and this Self is determined to do it its way.” ~ Maitreya (Wisdom Card, #79)
If you have managed to read this far, you already have “the long of it.” Now for “the short of it:”
• “To put it all very simply, be very careful with resistance. Resist by standing for an alternative that is positive, uplifting, and avoid resisting [protesting] against anything. That way you will always be in Alignment with Higher Self.” ~ Dennis Dossett (When Is Resistance Not Resistance?).
That way you won’t be “pinching off” your connection with Higher Self. That really is a “Win-Win!”
Look, you are going to find yourself Taking Sides far more often than is necessary or sometimes even wise. It's OK. It is natural and often is necessary. If you really need to take sides, just be sure to follow Maitreya's simple advice regarding how to do it:
• “Speak your truth about the situation quietly and clearly with honesty and love.” ~ Maitreya (Newsletter #15, June 4, 2001)
That last word, “Love,” rolls “Allowing,” “Balancing,” and “Aligning” all your life energies into one simple formula. That is Conscious Living in action.
Have a great month!
