Last week I stepped out into my yard and saw my next-door neighbor standing in his driveway looking at last fall’s dandelions that he hadn’t pulled. They were showing him just how beautifully they had weathered the winter and how lush they were beginning to grow in the first warm days of spring, their bright yellow heads beaming in the morning sun.
“Hi!” I shouted. “How’s it going?”
“Aww – you know, it is what it is,” he grumbled.
“At that moment I recoiled from my neighbor’s dreary greeting. I, too, noticed some dandelions blooming in my yard that had escaped my attention last fall. But I did admire those bright yellow blossoms dancing in the cool spring breeze after months of gray winter. I think what struck me in that moment was recognizing how many times I had responded to a friendly query with “It is what it is.”
“No, it’s not what it is!” I thought to myself. Granted, there are dandelions in my grass that I would prefer not to be there, but that is just a fact, an observation. “No,” I thought. “It is what you allow it to be!” You can choose to see weeds or you can choose to see yellow flowers in a sea of green.
“Do this experiment: Fill an 8-ounce glass with 4 ounces of water. Is the glass half-full, or is the glass half-empty? Same glass, same water—those are facts anyone can observe. What makes the difference is how I choose to answer the question, and that answer can set the tone for the entire day or for my whole life ... and I get to choose!
Maitreya (channeled by Margaret McElroy), Abraham (channeled by Esther Hicks), Louise Hay, and many others tell us that, “Your thoughts create your reality.” That phrase is so simple that it almost sounds trite. (That's not just metaphysics but Quantum Physics!) But sometimes the simplest of truths are also among the most profound truths. This is just a variation on what is sometimes called the “Law of Attraction”—basically “like attracts like.” Simplicity has nothing to do with the power of this statement. Its power lies in putting us in charge of our own experience of life, giving us the responsibility to choose—to create—the kind of life experience we want.
Maitreya teaches us that we are on the earth plane to become our own master, in other words, to learn how to become the master of our own life rather than the slave of conditioning, fear, doubt—all the tools the Lower Self uses to keep us under its control. But the fact is that we cannot do that until we really understand that everything—all of it—really is under our control. That control is our free will, our choice.
“Ahh! But what about my KARMA?” I can hear some people say. Well, one’s karma is just another dandelion in the middle of the yard. We can choose to be unhappy and disgusted with the karmic facts of our life, or we can choose to perceive them as opportunities for growth that we chose to deal with before we reincarnated into the human body we now inhabit. Same dandelion, same karma, but the choice of response to the “facts” of our lives makes all the difference in our experience of life.
Life is . . . perception. The “facts” of my life and my present circumstances are relatively indisputable. But my choice of how I perceive those facts is also indisputable. My ability to choose is a fact, just like a dandelion in the grass. It is that fact of choice that puts the power of experiencing the “facts” of my life into my own hands. I can choose: Is my life “what it is” or is my life “what I allow it to be”?
I am reminded of two quotes that have been in my “Good Stuff” file for over 5 decades:
• “I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition.” ~ Martha Washington (1732-1802; First American First Lady)
• “
Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” ~ Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865; 16th US President)
In my truth, those are the facts, but every day—every moment—presents me with the choice of how I want to perceive my life, and more importantly, what I want to manifest in my future. Law of Attraction 101, the essence of simplicity. Yes, easier said than done sometimes, but with practice it can become a habit. With practice, we can learn to replace what we perceive as negatives in our lives with what we perceive as positives. And that practice begins with a simple choice. I’ll be writing more about this in future issues, but you can begin practicing today—if that is what you truly want. It is your choice, after all.
“So let’s end with where we started, with the title of this article: “Life is ... _________” (you fill in the blank). Is your glass half-full or is your glass half-empty?
Have a great month!
