It's All About the Energy!”
Life as “Improv”©

I did a quick (and very small) survey a few days ago, so I have some idea of what at least some people were thinking of when they read the title, “Life as Improv” (improvisation). Five of the seven people in my little survey group told me they thought this blog would be about life being unpredictable, with no “road map” or “instruction book.” One person said that “Life is spontaneous. It's basically a crap-shoot—rolling the dice—in terms of what happens.” Another disagreed entirely with the title saying that “Life is full of rules and restrictions; there's no real freedom at all!” Well, I disagree with all of them. What do you think at this point?
I'm not really expecting you to answer that question, but here's what I think: Yes, there is a “road map” ... of sorts. Your astrological natal chart is a blueprint of your life plan. It indicates the types of lessons you intended to work on in this life, but it doesn't tell you how to go about doing it. And will you actually learn those lessons? Well, that is totally up to your choice! The Universe doesn't make you learn those lessons, but it will provide you with plenty of opportunities (in the form of “nudging” or even “kicking” you) to choose how you will respond to the opportunity. Your natal chart does provide information regarding the likely timing of those opportunities, but you can learn life lessons at any time during your incarnation. Your learning is not “limited” by your stars. Actual learning, however, is neither demanded nor guaranteed. As for the “instruction book,” sorry; no such luck.
And what about “rolling the dice” (or, if you prefer, what “hand are you dealt”)? Yes, that is spontaneous, but in my world, there are no “accidents.” Everything happens for a reason, and often more than one. And yes, the “deck” (or “weighted dice” if you prefer) is “stacked,” but it is always stacked in your favor!
• “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882; American writer and philosopher)
Notice the major caveat here: “Once you make a decision.” The odds are indeed stacked in your favor, but you have to choose what you want. Unless there are major unlearned lessons involved (or karma or trapped energy—both of which come with lessons) that prevent your manifesting it, your choice and your positive expectation dramatically increase the likelihood of manifesting what you want. Of course, there is a little more to it, but that is the most important part (see Dancing with the Energy – Book 3: Conscious Living – Creating the Life You Desire for details).
Ahh, but what about the “rules,” what about the restrictions and constraints? Well, think what human life on the earth plane would be without them—anarchy, chaos. Are they all good? Of course not. Both Maitreya (channeled by Margaret McElroy) and Abraham (channeled by Esther Hicks) have told us repeatedly that we wouldn't need them if we chose to behave in the highest interest of all concerned, but humanity just isn't “there” yet. Until then, laws, social norms, conventions, etc.—all forms of conditioning—can (and often do) have their positive value for both individuals and for societies. But we are free to choose whether to abide by them, to flaunt them, or to discern between ego or the greater good in every case. Any way you slice it, what we do is ultimately our choice. Ultimately the choice may have unpleasant consequences, but it is less important (perhaps even irrelevant) as long as our choice is in alignment with our Higher Self.
• “Life, with its rules, its obligations, and its freedoms, is like a sonnet: You're given the form, but you have to write the sonnet yourself.” ~ Madeleine L'Engle (1918-2007; American author; A Wrinkle in Time, 1962)
So, how about “spontaneity?” Isn't that a good thing? If that were the case then “winging it” (doing or trying to do something without much practice or preparation) would be successful far more frequently than most people are willing to admit. The term, “winging it” is almost always used as an admission of action without proper preparation or time to rehearse (a.k.a. a dysfunctional habit). It usually refers to a “last-ditch effort” to try to pluck success from the jaws of failure, and occasionally it works. But it doesn't “stack the deck” in your favor in the long run by any means. In fact, the long-run odds are really much more like plucking failure from the jaws of success. Surely, there's a better way?
The flip (positive) side of spontaneity is behaving in an open, natural, and uninhibited manner, something that springs forth naturally much like an old habit. In this case, the habit is functional, and generally leads to success. But there's a little more to it than just that. I'll have more to say about it a bit later.
Okay, so we have established that I disagree with all of my small-panel survey respondents. What do I have in mind? Improvisation (”Improv” as it is called) is indeed spontaneous, but it is also very serious business. It is a theatrical art form taught in one or more courses in many of the best acting schools in the world, and it doesn't just apply to comedy although comedy is where you are most likely to find it being used. But spontaneity doesn't mean there are no rules. For example,
• “In improvisation there is one hard and fast rule, and that rule is known as 'Yes, and.'” ~ Maya Rudolph (1972-; American actress & comedienne)
Why is it a hard and fast rule? Because “It's All About the Energy!” (the byline on my website and all of my classes). Vibrationally managing the flow of your life energies by first aligning them with Higher Self before taking verbal or physical action is critical to “stacking the deck” in your energetic favor (see my three “Dancing with the Energy” books). Anything else is counterproductive. Why? Consider the following:
”Yes, but ...” stops the flow of energy.
”Yes, if ...” stops the flow of energy.
”Yes, when ...” stops the flow of energy.
On the other hand, “Yes, and” not only acknowledges the current situation, it also opens the energetic door to creating whatever it is you want to manifest. If you like your current situation, “Yes, and” invites more of the same at the very least. If you don't like your current situation, “Yes, and” invites something (you choose what) that is even better than what you have now. In any language, that's called a “Win-Win.”
“Yes, and” is definitely not just “winging it.” It is really an example of what I call Dynamic Balance, an important component of Conscious Living as described in the Dancing with the Energy books. Dynamic Balance is essentially “constant adjustment to constant change.” And what is more constant in life than change? (Certainly not death or taxes, LOL!) Dynamic Balance is the only reliable way to maintain a sense of stability and sanity in a world that is “rockin' & rollin'” under your feet. Yes, Dynamic Balance is definitely characterized by spontaneity, but only in the most positive and functional sense of the term.
Just as Madeleine L'Engle said in the quote above: “You're given the form, but you have to write the sonnet yourself.” Doing that successfully requires Dynamic Balance and spontaneity. How do you do that?
• “Say 'Yes' and you'll figure it out later.” ~ Tina Fey (1970-; American actress, comedian, writer, & producer)
Just say “YES.” There are no road maps or instruction books; Dynamic Balance and spontaneity are the name of the game, but don't try just “winging-it.” Instead, learn about and practice the principles and techniques of Conscious Living to “stack the deck” in your long-run favor. That is your best bet. Conscious Living is a program for vibrationally managing all aspects of life. As Abraham suggests:
• “Say 'Yes' to whatever it is. Because if you say 'Yes' to it and then you get in the middle of it, and you say, 'Uh oh, this isn't really turning out the way I wanted it to,' then out of that is born another desire. And as you say 'Yes' to that, then it turns out. And you say, 'Well, it's still not quite right.' So you have another desire ... until eventually you get it exactly right. You cannot get it wrong. No creation is ever complete. Just do it.” ~ Abraham (Collective consciousness of Spirit as channeled by Esther Hicks, Tucson, AZ, February 15, 2000)
”Life is Improv” with a host of accompanying choices. Conscious Living is one such choice as shared in my three Dancing with the Energy books. That's what I believe, and it is working for me better than anything else I have tried so far in this life. What choices are best for you?
Have a great month!
