“Give It No Energy!” - Part I©

In counseling my clients over the past few months regarding situations in their lives, I have often quoted Maitreya's advice to “Give it no energy!” What has surprised me is how often a client then asks me, “What exactly do you mean by that?” I thought it was pretty self-explanatory until I started asking them what they thought it means. To my surprise, the answers were all over the map and were often closely related to how they try to cope with situations in their life. It has happened often enough that I decided that what Maitreya is saying either is not as simple as it sounds or at least may need some additional explanation to assist some clients' understanding.
It's not that Maitreya wrote about it infrequently; I found over two dozen instances just in his newsletters alone. It is just that often Maitreya is very terse, to the point, and matter-of-fact. Nonetheless, I think his meaning is pretty clear when one considers the context and content surrounding that simple phrase, “Give it no energy.” So just for clarification, here is the essence of Maitreya's comments on this topic. For clarity, let's examine some examples (identified by Newsletter # [NL#] as indicated below) of the first two aspects in Part I of this topic and take up additional examples of the final aspects next month in Part II.
Why Do We “Give It Energy?”
Just what is the “it” to which we are so prone to give our energy and why do we do it? Every one of my clients has replied with some variant of “the situation”—but usually in more specific terms. For example, they attribute the problem to “her/him,” the election, lack of abundance, etc. To put it bluntly, the cause of the need to give “it” energy is almost always outside of the individual. Psychologists call this tendency the “fundamental attribution error.” In other words people have a strong tendency to blame everything that is wrong in their life to external causes. However, people are also experts at taking credit for the cause of things that they judge as positive (for example, talent, motivation, hard work). That's just how we are perceptually “wired” as human beings. As Pogo (a daily newspaper comic strip character drawn by Walt Kelly from 1948-1975) used to put it:
• “We have met the enemy, and he is us!”
To psychologists, the explanation for the fundamental attribution error is that attributing the cause of negative outcomes to external factors helps to protect the ego. For positive outcomes, however, internal attributions help to support or appease the ego. Either way, the resulting bias and distortion in human information processing just feels good—at least to the ego, which the Self thrives upon. However, Maitreya tells us that there is a deeper cause underlying this phenomenon:
• “It is the Self that wants to justify itself, to put its point of view forward, and to defend itself. The Higher Self knows the truth. It is as simple as that and, if you give the situation no energy, it will disappear [from] whence it came” (NL #259, November 9, 2009).
• “Your whole incarnation is meant to be one of compassion and love, but not to give in to the emotional body and the drama it likes to create.” (NL #201, July 18, 2007)
• “Do not hold on to anger! Do not hold on to grudges or hate another. It is this kind of energy that is presently responsible for the troubles in the world.” (NL #126, September 22, 2004)
• “Do not have any fear of what [change] is happening. . . . If you have fear, you will draw what you fear into your energy. Everything is meant to be. . . . The next 30 earth years will bring incredible change on a positive level. However, in order for it to fall into place, the old has to be removed—the old ways of doing things and the old establishments. Remember, have no fear and give no energy to it.” (NL #357, August 9, 2011)
And the consequences?
By giving energy to situations [anger, hatred, uncertainty, and other emotions], they [humanity] make it worse, for all energy is creative. Once given force, or thought, it becomes manifest.” (NL #3, October 30, 2000)
What is the Solution?
Maitreya provides a number of examples regarding this question:
• “Try not to give energy to these happenings [changes] either by discussing them with friends or making comment yourself. This will only give energy to what is happening.” (NL #357, August 9, 2011).
• “If you do not agree with another, do not waste energy arguing with that person. What a waste of energy! Just say to yourself, 'Well, that is their choice and belief, but it is not mine' and let it be. Give it no more energy. It will aggravate you for a short while, but eventually, you will find that you will accept that person for who they are, not what they believe in. In time, their belief system will be unimportant.” (NL #296, March 1, 2010)
• “Let go of your concern for others. Give nothing any energy. Fear nothing. Ask yourself, 'What do I need in life to be happy?' and then create it. It will not happen overnight in earth time, but it will gradually come to pass.” (NL #326, June 14, 2010)
• “Let go of the need to be right, to be the victor. Do not give anything any energy. What does it matter except to the Self who has to do this, because this is what it thinks it must do because of habit over years of life. Just walk away. Let it become the other person's problem, not yours. Give it no energy at all. You will soon see a difference in your life. Yes, there will be the sadness of letting go. Perhaps the situation has been happening over many incarnations. However, one soon heals. Just remember that. The healing process starts immediately—as soon as you let go!” (NL #323, May 31, 2010)
In short, we give the Self part of us energy whenever we give our attention to any negativity in our lives. It's as simple as that. What we give attention (energy) to expands, and what we don't give any attention to contracts. That's Law of Attraction 101, the basic course. Another way to put it is simply to give our attention to what we want and minimize or withhold our attention from what we don't want.
But how do we know when to “stand up for what's right” versus just feed the Self by giving it attention? That answer is also very simple: whenever our emotions are involved. As Maitreya says, we are here on the earth plane to learn to detach from the emotional body. Simple, yes, but far easier said than done.
Have a great month!
