In 1977 when I was taking a metaphysical class, we were given a homework assignment to write an essay comparing Santa Claus and God. I found it to be a very interesting assignment and highly recommend it for your meditations and/or journaling as the Holiday Season approaches.
Fast forward nearly four decades. One day as I was pondering what to write for the blog on my website, I thought about that essay, and the following lines of verse began to pop into my thoughts. So in the spirit of the Season and in the spirit of comparing Santa Claus with God, I offer the following for your contemplation.
In My Father's Workshop
It's a fascinating place,
all the sights and sounds
of my Father working away.
I love it here
in my Father's workshop.
His tools are the laws of Nature,
and his techniques are of his
very essence: Love, Joy, Peace.
There is no better place to be than here
in my Father's workshop.
I hear him humming* a strangely familiar tune.
If He stopped humming, all the tools
in the workshop would be stilled,
and there would be no sound at all
in my Father's workshop.
But He never stops humming,
and His song is the most beautiful
I've ever heard. There's no song
like it anywhere, except
in my Father's workshop.
And the way he plies his skills is marvelous to behold!
The Laws of Nature are filled with His unconditional Love, shine with
His boundless Joy, and gladly bend to His all-encompassing Peace.
There are other great Masters, but only one Supreme Master
in my Father's workshop.
I, like the puppet, Pinnochio†, am the creation of the Master.
He, like the carpenter, Geppetto†, has but one desire,
that I become His real Son.
There is no truer Love than
in my Father's workshop.
I am His apprentice. If I practice my humming until I learn the tune,
one day, I too, shall become a Master. Until then my elder brothers,
His other Masters, will help me to learn. Then I will help my
younger siblings learn as well. You see, we're all family here
in my Father's workshop.
* Aum – Sanskrit term for vibration, the sound of Creation
† The Adventures of Pinnochio, Carlo Collodi (1883)
Wishing you and yours the very best of this joyous Holiday Season!
