Changing Behaviors and Habits©

Last month I discussed the notion of Local Fields in the Matrix. Local fields are sub-fields of energy that are either shared by groups of individuals (e.g., race, gender, religion, culture, etc.) or that are specific to each of us. These local or "morphic" fields not only shape and define the cells, tissues, and organs of all living organisms, they also shape and define us as individual human beings (e.g., learning, memory, emotions, diseases, etc.). These factors ultimately shape and determine our individual behaviors and habits.
But what about choice and free will? Are we simply "victims" of our morphic fields, held for ransom by the energies that make up every atom and vibration of our being? Well, "Yes" and "No". Of course, I can change my mind at any time about what I'll have for dinner tonight—even if I have to make a special trip to the market in order to satisfy my gustatory whims of the moment!
But what about behaviors that have strong consequences such as behaving in violation of social customs or breaking the law? We still have a choice, but we are more likely to consider the consequences of our choice before engaging in the behavior. And if we feel that we have no choice (the behavior in question is just too extreme given the consequences) well, we've still made a choice. It may not be what we want to do, but we choose to do it anyway because the consequences are just too severe if we don't. Such influences on our behavior clearly derive from some of the morphic fields we discussed last month. Our choices of behaviors "resonate" with the morphic fields of our culture, legal environment, social groups, etc. So do we really have a choice?
And what about behaviors for which the legal or social consequences are weak or nonexistent, but which we just can't seem to change no matter how hard we try. In other words, what about our "habits"? Well, these behaviors are also influenced by morphic fields—our own! At any given moment in time, we resonate more strongly with our own morphic fields than with those from any other source. The more we repeat any behavior, the stronger its morphic field becomes. At some point, the morphic resonance becomes just too great a force for "willpower." Habits trump willpower most of the time.
The Indian yogi and western spiritual teacher, Paramhansa Yogananda, was often quoted as saying "Environment is stronger than willpower." This is true even of our own personal habits because the choice to engage or not engage in habitual behaviors is (a) largely unconscious and (b) even when we do think about it, the choice is always in the context of our morphic "environment". So do we ever really have a choice? At the end of the day, we really are "hostage" even to our own habits, aren't we? The answer is likely "Yes", if we just keep beating our heads against the wall of habit, failing time after time to permanently change our behavior. But the answer can be "No" if we choose to change the energy in the relevant local morphic fields of the matrix!
Maitreya teaches that we are here on the earth plane to learn to become our own Master. In other words, we must learn not to be prisoners either of social and cultural conditioning or of our own habits. Maitreya, Yogananda, and many other spiritual teachers advise us to surround ourselves with good company, good books, etc., etc., because they know that environment really is stronger than willpower. Changing our external environment certainly helps but changing our internal environment is essential. Spiritually speaking, that process is called "transformation", changing one's current vibrational frequency to a higher vibrational frequency. But how can we change our internal environment? Let's examine this a bit more.
Changing Behavioral Fields
As I said before, the more a behavior is repeated, the stronger its morphic field becomes and the more we resonate with it. We can't very reliably just “will” a change in habitual behavior. We have to work to change the energy in the relevant morphic fields—or replace the old energy with an entirely new energy—if we hope to have any real chance of success. The conscious mind simply does not override either the subconscious mind or the local fields of which it is made.
The British biologist, Rupert Sheldrake, says that “A field brings about material effects while the system is tuned into it. But if the tuning is changed then other fields come into play: the original field disappears.” The key phrase here is “tuned into”. By tuning-in to a new field that supports a change in behavior, we feel different. We are likely to feel more confident and able to actually change the behavior because the new field has its own resonance. But if we think too soon that we have “beat the old habit” before the new field becomes stronger than the old one, we are likely to backslide and ultimately fail because the old field is stronger than the new one.
So what's the solution? Remember what we discussed in previous articles in this newsletter:
1. We are all made up of energy that vibrates so fast we appear as solid matter.
2. We are linked by a web that connects us all, known as the Matrix.
3. We send our thoughts out into the Matrix and those thoughts are attracted back to us as life experiences.
4. We can change how we experience life by changing our local morphic fields (energy) in the Matrix.
To repeat what I wrote last month, the last point promises the potential to heal ourselves at every level of the human experience. In addition, it opens the door to a new way of changing not only our old habits, but also a way to assist the process of transformation, raising our vibrational frequency to a new level of consciousness. It puts the power to become the Master of our life straight into our own hands. This is the very core of Maitreya's teachings. It is also the quantum physics basis for a practical application that we'll address in more detail next month. Until then remember, “From the Ancient Wisdoms to Quantum Physics, It's All About the Energy!”
Have a great month!
